Zcash's Ironwood Upgrade Nears as Price Recovers — Security Focus Remains

Zcash's Ironwood upgrade nears testnet as developers tackle security flaws. Focus is on restoring confidence after a severe price crash.

Zcash developers are taking strides toward activating the Ironwood upgrade on the testnet, a move crucial for restoring confidence in Zcash after a dramatic price crash. According to Decrypt, this comes in response to a critical counterfeiting vulnerability that was disclosed last month, which previously left the integrity of Zcash's circulating supply in question.

“Security has been our main focus,” said Zcash co-founder Zooko Wilcox. His statement highlights how Zcash is prioritizing enterprise user support, such as mining pools and exchanges, to ensure a smooth transition to Ironwood. The panic following the vulnerability led to significant price losses, but Zcash has recouped about half of those losses.

Decrypt reported that developer Sean Bowe emphasized the importance of prompt and safe activation on the Zcash mainnet. There's a parallel focus on formal verification work, ensuring no supply integrity concerns remain. However, some wallets might not be ready for the upgrade, though Bowe notes sufficient alternatives and testnet time for them.

Meanwhile, Jason McGee from Shielded Labs noted that efforts are split between deploying Ironwood and transitioning Zcash's ecosystem from Zcashd software to the new Z3 stack. This includes the Zebra full node and the Zaino indexing service. Despite timelines being tight, McGee is optimistic about completing both by late July.

The challenge lies with infrastructure providers needing to adapt to the new software stack rapidly. McGee shared that feedback has been mixed, with some respondents ready and others requiring more time. Options to mitigate risks, such as delaying the upgrade or conducting third-party security audits, are being considered.

The overarching goal is clear: activate Ironwood quickly while ensuring safe migration for all stakeholders. As Zcash developers continue their work, the focus is on making transitions smooth and maintaining security—an endeavor that shows Zcash's dedication to overcoming recent challenges.
