Prometheum Targets Wall Street to Scale Tokenized Securities

Prometheum aims to bridge crypto and traditional finance by leveraging broker-dealer networks for tokenized securities distribution.

Prometheum is banking on traditional broker-dealers to unlock the potential of tokenized securities.

There's a gap in the crypto world that Prometheum is eager to fill: distribution. Aaron Kaplan, the company's co-founder and co-CEO, believes that crypto hasn't cracked the code on getting tokenized securities to mainstream investors. According to CoinDesk, Kaplan stated in an interview that while tokenization has been addressed, the existing distribution channels for these digital assets remain underutilized.

Tokenized securities—digital tokens that represent traditional financial assets like stocks and bonds—are issued on blockchains but struggle with reaching investors through familiar broker-dealer networks. Prometheum recently launched its Digital Brokerage Solutions through Prometheum Capital, aiming to let these networks offer crypto assets directly via traditional brokerage accounts.

Kaplan emphasizes that without the existing distribution machinery of Wall Street, tokenized securities risk remaining niche. His aim isn't to replace the system but to modernize it. Prometheum's infrastructure is designed to integrate blockchain-based assets into established brokerage frameworks, maintaining investor protections like custody controls and compliance oversight.

Joining the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) Industry Working Group, Prometheum is among over 50 firms shaping the future of the Depository Trust Company's tokenization service. Kaplan says building this bridge between issuers and institutional distribution channels creates a "flywheel effect," facilitating broader financial system integration.

Prometheum's correspondent clearing clients include Arete Wealth Management, Network 1 Financial Securities, and an unnamed broker-dealer. Kaplan hints at an upcoming institutional distribution partnership that could further draw large issuers into the ecosystem.

Kaplan envisions a future where the broker-dealer channel is the primary route for reaching investors with digital assets. He argues that as tokenized products become more efficient, broker-dealers will require the infrastructure Prometheum offers to compete effectively.

According to CoinDesk, the digital asset industry is shifting its focus from token creation to embedding blockchain-based assets into existing financial systems. Prometheum is making a calculated wager that Wall Street's infrastructure is crucial for realizing tokenization's promise at scale.
