Bitcoin ETF Inflows Hit $75.7M — But Momentum Stalls

Bitcoin ETFs see $75.7M in inflows, marking two weeks of gains. But without breaking $65K, the recovery struggles for momentum.
$75.7 million in net inflows. That's what US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded for the week ending July 17. This marks a second consecutive week of positive flows, according to SoSoValue data. Despite this influx, the momentum hasn't been sufficient to drive a robust recovery in the market.
The latest influx of $75.7 million comes on the heels of $197.4 million recorded the previous week, bringing July's total ETF inflows to $200.2 million. However, this upbeat trend contrasts sharply with the $4.5 billion in net outflows observed in June, leaving the year's total net flows in the negative at $5.2 billion. This discrepancy highlights the volatility and the uncertain climate currently pervading the Bitcoin ETF market.
Analysts suggest this return of inflows hints at easing selling pressure, yet the pace of buying remains insufficient to establish a broader uptrend. Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com, emphasized the need for Bitcoin to decisively break the $65,000–$65,500 range to signal a true reversal of its current bearish trajectory. As things stand, Bitcoin is hovering near the $64,000 mark, a level that hardly instills confidence among investors.
Further complicating the outlook, Citigroup's recent forecast adjustments have injected a note of caution into the market. On July 1, the bank slashed its 12-month Bitcoin ETF inflow forecast from a bullish $10 billion to zero, citing weaker-than-expected inflows and recent outflows as key reasons. The bank also revised its 12-month Bitcoin price target down from $112,000 to $82,000, reflecting a more conservative stance on the cryptocurrency's near-term prospects.
In addition, Citigroup's updated forecast underscores the challenges the Bitcoin market faces in reigniting investor enthusiasm. The revised outlook suggests that external factors, such as regulatory changes or macroeconomic shifts, may be necessary to catalyze a more pronounced recovery. These adjustments underscore the cautious sentiment currently prevailing among institutional investors, who remain wary of committing large-scale capital without clearer signs of market stabilization.

Amid these developments, some market analysts draw parallels between the trajectory of Bitcoin ETFs and that of gold ETFs. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas compared the two, noting that both have experienced periods of rapid adoption followed by extended phases of weaker performance. In an X post, Balchunas suggested that Bitcoin ETFs might follow a similar pattern of "spectacular gains, painful drawdowns, and recoveries," with each cycle potentially setting higher highs over time.
This comparison with gold ETFs offers a glimmer of hope for Bitcoin enthusiasts who believe in the cryptocurrency's long-term potential. Gold ETFs have historically demonstrated resilience, bouncing back from downturns to achieve new heights. If Bitcoin ETFs follow a similar trajectory, investors might eventually witness a resurgence in demand, driven by renewed confidence in the digital asset's value proposition.
Still, the Bitcoin market is in need of a catalyst strong enough to transform these tentative inflows into a sustained upward trend. Simon-Peter Massabni pointed out the absence of a "sufficiently strong catalyst" capable of converting the current rebound into a genuine trend. Until such a catalyst emerges, investors will likely continue to approach the market with caution, waiting for more definitive signals of a bullish shift.
In the meantime, the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, a widely-watched indicator of market sentiment, can offer insights into the prevailing mood among Bitcoin investors. Currently, the index reflects a state of caution, indicating that while some optimism exists, it is tempered by broader concerns about the market's direction.
As the Bitcoin market navigates these uncertain waters, observers remain on the lookout for events that could alter the current landscape. Such events might include regulatory developments, shifts in macroeconomic conditions, or technological advancements that enhance Bitcoin's utility and appeal. Until then, Bitcoin ETF inflows, while encouraging, remain a tentative sign of recovery rather than a definitive indication of a new bullish era.
