Sampson was working from home in Missoula, Montana, when her phone lit up with a call that appeared to come from her adult daughter. The familiar ringtone sounded, adding to the authenticity of the moment. When she answered, she heard what sounded like her daughter crying. "It was her voice, I know her scared cry," Sampson tells CNBC Make It. Her mind raced as she thought, perhaps, her daughter had been in a car wreck. Moments later, a man came on the line. Initially calm, he used her first name and asked if she was her daughter's mother. Then, his tone shifted dramatically.

Sampson recalls the man shouting, making threats and demanding money, warning her not to contact the police or try to reach her daughter. Despite having seen news stories about similar kidnapping scams where callers impersonate family members in distress, the voice on the line sounded so real that she hesitated to risk being wrong. The emotional turmoil peaked when she heard her daughter's voice say "mom," further clouding her judgment. "It was the most afraid I've ever experienced in my life," Sampson expresses, capturing the visceral fear she felt during the ordeal.

In a panic, Sampson told the caller that she would send money but kept asking to speak to her daughter. The caller, growing increasingly aggressive, demanded money through PayPal but never specified an amount. At that moment, her sister, who was with her, called 911 while the scammer periodically hung up and called back. Sampson utilized those gaps to attempt reaching family members and her daughter's workplace in Helena, Montana, about two hours away. The sense of urgency heightened with each passing minute, intensifying her fear when she was unable to directly contact her daughter.

Approximately 15 to 20 minutes after the first call, Sampson's daughter was located at her workplace after briefly stepping away from her desk. The relief was palpable, but it was short-lived as the calls from the scammer ceased and did not resume. The perpetrator was never identified, leaving Sampson with lingering fear and doubt.

In the weeks following the incident, Sampson's sense of security was severely shaken. She became more cautious at home, double-checking locks and paying closer attention to her surroundings. The experience prompted her to change her phone settings, stating, "I don't ever want to hear that ringtone again." Detective agencies informed her that little could be done because the calls were incredibly difficult to trace. While police in Missoula did not discuss Sampson's situation specifically, they acknowledged a rise in similar scams involving callers impersonating family members and demanding money.

Officer Whitney Bennett, a spokesperson for the Missoula Police Department, noted that the level of sophistication in these scams has evolved significantly in recent years. Imposter scams were reported as the most prevalent type of fraud complaint last year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. The number of cases surged roughly 19% to approximately one million in 2025, with losses exceeding $3.5 billion. The alarming statistics reflect a growing trend where scammers adopt tools that can replicate voices and execute conversations in real-time, reshaping how individuals perceive and interact with phone calls.

Voice-based scams are fundamentally altering people's relationship with communication devices. Ian Bednowitz, general manager of identity and privacy at LifeLock, explains that for decades, hearing a familiar voice or seeing a known number was often enough to signal trust. However, this assumption is breaking down as scammers gain access to advanced technology that mimics voices and spoofs caller IDs. Bednowitz cautions, "You shouldn't be really answering your phone, especially if it's an unknown or unexpected call." This caution extends to calls purportedly from banks or government agencies, such as the Internal Revenue Service, which typically initiates contact through mail and does not demand immediate payment over the phone.

The sophistication of these scams often leaves victims feeling vulnerable and confused. Even calls that seem to come from someone you know can be deceptively spoofed. Scammers require minimal information to create a convincing façade. Short audio clips taken from social media, voicemails, or other recordings can be utilized to generate a synthetic version of someone's voice. This audio is then combined with spoofed caller ID and personal details—such as names, workplaces, and family relationships—to fashion a call that feels immediate and specific.
